DIY Beauty Dish
Finished my DIY beauty dish today.
Equipment:
- metal single slot light switch box (fit the Canon580 better and is a bit sturdier) $2
- 14" plastic planter $7
- 2.5" deep plastic food container $0
- 3" convex auto mirror $2
- paint $4
- various screws and bolts (1/4-20) $0
- lumber strapping bracket $2
I first tried a deeper food dish (about as deep as a 50CD canister) but found that the flash had a distinct spot in the center of the coverage, so I found a smaller ~2.5" container and fixed the mirror into the bottom of that.
I'm gonna change the metal strap to make it a bit stronger and to center the flash into the opening
Using our Sekonic Digipro X-1 hand-held meter set at 125/sec @ ISO 400 placed 5' from the Canon580 set at 1/8th power:
F/4 with the dish
F/11 bare
Gentled Auto repair
WD40 + tin foil and my Gentled Auto is working again!
This was prompted when the device failed on Sunday morning in Sark while on the cliff above Maseline harbour. It suffered a very brief dipping at Shell Beach a week earlier which must have accelerated the corrosion inside. Whatever the exact cause, it is now working perfectly.
